Things i know... achoo.. ..

Playing along with Shae over @ Yay For Home!

Since it the season to be sneezy, i thought i'd share with you the Things i know about
Hay Fever.
I need me one of these!

As much as i use to think that Hay fever was when a person was allergic to hay and had a fever, I later found out this was not the case.

After a day of having to deal with a lot of snot and itchy eyes, we realized that our little guy Mr 4 also has hay fever. Luckily its only myself and him that suffer from it and not the whole family.

I know - That my face is really itchy, my eyes are red and puffy and my head feels like its going to explode if i don't stop sneezing.

Hay Fever At A Glance
Hay fever (Allergic rhinitis) is common.
Allergy symptoms mimic chronic colds.
Allergic rhinitis can lead to other diseases.
The best way to treat an allergy condition is to identify the allergic substance and avoid it.
Effective treatment is available in many forms.

What is Hay Fever?
Hay fever is the common name for allergic rhinitis
(from rhino meaning of the nose and it is meaning inflammatory),
so it is defined as inflammation of the nose caused by allergy. However, your nose is not the only organ which may be affected by allergic rhinitis. You may also have problems with your eyes, sinuses, throat and ears."

Symptoms of Hay Fever are:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Congested nose
  • Sensation of plugged ear/s
  • Watery, bloodshot eyes
  • Itching of nose, soft palate, ear canal, eyes, and/or skin
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble sleeping

Severe symptoms may include:
  • Sweats
  • Headaches
  • Loss of smell and taste
  • Facial pain caused by blocked sinuses
  • Itchiness spreads from the throat, to the nose and ears

The Treatment options for hay fever:

There is a vast array of over-the-counter and prescription medications for treating hay fever symptoms.

Some medications include:
  • Antihistamine sprays or tablets
  • Eye Drops
  • Nasal Corticosteroids
  • Oral corticosteroids
  • Alternative therapies are also available
Polaramine works best for me.

How can hay fever be prevented?

Hayfever can be prevented by:
Avoiding exposure to the allergens that trigger hay fever symptoms;
Undergoing a treatment called immunotherapy so that allergens no longer trigger hayfever;
Taking medication, before exposure to allergens, so that the lining of the nose does not swell up.

I was curious to find out if there was any Home Remedies to help stop Hay fever and this is what i found.
Having 1 teaspoon Honey everyday, but it NEEDS to be honey from where you live - made with the same pollon, its so you get used to it.

Did you know...
Alcoholic drinks worsen hayfever. Beer, wine and other spirits contain histamine — the chemical that sets off allergy symptoms in the body.

What do you use to help with Hay fever?

My husband has always been sensitive to strong smells like perfume etc but has recently developed a strong reaction to flowers in the house. I'm sure it's worse for him but this new development I find most distressing! ;)

I'm so sorry you are struggling with the dreaded hay fever. Most people in this house (that are biologically related to my husband) get hay fever and it is the season for sneezin, so it's clarityne and nasonex all round. Im so glad I dont get it. I feel for you though because I see what my guys go through.

I never suffered from hay fever until we moved into our current home - I have to keep the Telfast close at hand! One day i may have to invest in Kleenex shares too!

oh dear oh dear I never had hay fever before, but eczema runs in the family so that kinda sucks too. Hope you get better soon!

The home remedy and the Did you know? are really interesting. I suffer quite badly - although, *touch wood* I seem to have avoided it so far this year. It certainly wasn't fun when I was pregnant last year, that's for sure.

So strange because my daughter and I have just started getting hayfever this year. I never knew it was so prevalent this time of year.

No wine sounds a bit drastic though :)

My 6 year old suffers from it terribly and it triggers his asthma. We hate hayfever in this house.
